“I don't want to be a point guard, or a two-guard, I want people to think of me as "creative", I just want to create on the court.” - “The Answer," b.k.a. “Bubba Chuck.”
The point guard, or the floor general, is essential to a team's success. A great point guard controls the pace of the game and the emotional swings of his team. Great point guards have mastered the art of communication. In a limited period of time, they can relay a message with very few words. They read emotions and react. They utilize dead ball situations and timeouts to seek tutelage and make adjustments. As they go, so shall the team .
Below is an article within our feature series titled, "The Floor General." Next up is St. Thomas Aquinas guard Emma Boslet. --By Christian Mordi @thedribbledrop on Instagram and Twitter.
TheDribbleDrop: If you were to use one word to describe your playing style, what would it be and why?
Emma Boslet: Selfless. I see myself as a playmaker and point guard first before anything on the court. I like to apply pressure with the movement of the ball. I want to get my teammates open.
TheDribbleDrop: You could’ve gone to a lot of high schools in your area. What pulled you into St. Thomas Aquinas?
Emma Boslet: My teammate Megan Herka. She was going there from the jump and I have been playing with her since the second grade. The previous coach also really pulled me in.
TheDribbleDrop: After your sophomore year, you guys pull in a big transfer in Kelsey Ransom. How important was it to you guys to get her and what was her impact on the program?
Emma Boslet: When Kelsey came over, it was another boost of energy to the team. She was my dynamic duo partner. When I was struggling, she had my back. She is a strong player who we didn’t know we truly needed until she got there. Having her as a teammate was amazing.
TheDribbleDrop: You have an awesome young head coach in Coach G. If you were to use one word to describe her coaching style, what would it be and why? Tell me about your relationship with her.
Emma Boslet: Coach and I have always really been close. I was pretty shy as a freshman but the coach really helped me open up and she has been a model figure for me on and off the court. She has always been there for me and made my experience so much better.
One word to describe her coaching style would be enthusiastic. Everything that she talks to us about in regards to the game she’s as excited and passionate about as we are as players. Every game, every practice, she’s live. She’s in the moment. She’s with us always.
TheDribbleDrop: You play your first couple of high school seasons on Team Miller and wrap it up with NJ Panthers. Tell me about your experiences there.
Emma Boslet: Playing for both teams was awesome. Team Miller was an experience I’ll never forget. I got to play with some of my best friends. We all grew really close.
I joined the NJ Panthers my last year with Kelsey. The coaching was insanely good. I learned so much during my time there. He opened my eyes to a lot of stuff on the floor.
TheDribbleDrop: When was the first time you knew that playing college basketball was a legit option for you on the Division one level. Was there a big tournament or live period event or anything in general that stood out to you?
Emma Boslet: When I got my first offer. Funny thing is my first offer was from St. Joes. They saw that potential in me early. That really pushed my already intense drive to another level.
TheDribbleDrop: You won the County tournament two years in a row. How important was that to you.
Emma Boslet: Winning the county tournament was always a dream for me coming in as a freshman. Winning it back to back was insane. With that being said, it was something that I needed to do. It had to be done.
TheDribbleDrop: You leave St. Thomas Aquinas as the school's all-time leading scorer. Tell me your thoughts on that.
Emma Boslet: Breaking the record wasn’t something I thought about every game my senior year, but it was something now that it’s over that I will never forget. It will always leave its mark for me on a personal level at the school. As a team we left the mark on the County trophies, but that one was for me alone.
TheDribbleDrop: You committed to St. Joes. Why was that the ideal school for you?
Emma Boslet: I needed to be somewhere lively. Philly is beautiful and I loved the campus. Them being my first offer meant a lot to me and showed early how much they believed in me. My connection with the staff is awesome. They are always talking about the future and ways I can grow as a player. As a basketball program, they are everything I wanted. The official visit matched it as well.
TheDribbleDrop: Looking back on it now, are there any regrets? If you could go back in time and talk to the freshman version of you and give one piece of basketball advice, what would it be?
Emma Boslet: No real regrets, but I do wish I pulled off a state championship. Looking back at the last game, I saw things I did wrong.. I wish I could take some things back even though I know we all make mistakes in a game.
If I could talk to the freshman version of me, I would say it is to play with more confidence. I’m proud of the way my career turned out, all I would say is to be more aggressive early.
